Kennedy Mubanga Declares Candidacy for Zambia Athletics Association Presidency

Kennedy Mubanga, a seasoned sports administrator and former General Secretary of the Zambia Athletics Association (ZAA), has officially announced his candidacy for the presidency of the ZAA in the upcoming December 2024 elections.

Mubanga, who currently chairs the Lilayi Athletics Academy, shared his intentions following a wave of inquiries from athletics affiliates, media, and the general public.

"I am officially announcing my candidacy for the Zambia Athletics Association Presidency at the Elective Annual General Meeting in December," Mubanga stated in a message to his supporters.

"I am contesting regardless of who else is running, and I am prepared to bring fresh leadership to the association."

Mubanga, who stepped down from his role as General Secretary in 2008 to join the Ministry of Sports as a Senior Sports Development Officer, acknowledged the impact of current ZAA President Elias Mpondela, whom he described as a mentor.

While recognizing Mpondela's contributions, Mubanga emphasized the need for change, citing the evolving demands of athletics and the need for a new direction.

"Comrade Mpondela has been a pivotal figure in my sports journey, and his legacy in athletics is undeniable.

However, it's time for a paradigm shift to meet the demands of the current generation and modern trends in athletics," Mubanga said.

"I have shared my views with him, and I believe it's time for fresh blood and vibrant energy to take the helm."

Mubanga, who has served in various roles, including Senior Sports Development Officer, Provincial Sports Development Coordinator, and Deputy Permanent Secretary, highlighted his deep understanding of athletics administration and public governance.

He expressed confidence in his ability to lead the ZAA, pledging to activate his "Athletics leadership DNA" and work tirelessly to develop the sport in Zambia.

"I know all the corners of athletics and public administration, and the ZAA will benefit from my vast experience and knowledge," he said.

"I am ready to serve and lead the revolution needed to bring change to the leadership of the Zambia Athletics Association."

Mubanga also called on supporters from the athletics community, provincial boards, clubs, and corporate partners to back his bid, emphasizing his commitment to serving with integrity and vision.

"As a well-known figure in national, regional, and international athletics circles, I ask for your support to make the needed change in our leadership," Mubanga urged.

"Let's unite and make a difference in the development of athletics in Zambia."

The ZAA elections are scheduled to take place before the current executive's tenure ends on December 20, 2024.

Mubanga’s candidacy sets the stage for a highly anticipated contest, signaling potential shifts in the governance of Zambian athletics.
